Philippine Airlines currently flies seven times weekly to Vancouver with three of those flights continuing on to Toronto. According to PAL President Ramon Ang, Philippine Airlines plans to double the number of flights it currently operates to Canada. "With the successful conclusion of the government-to-government air talks, we look forward to flying twice daily to Canada and offering our passengers greater flexibility and choice," said Ang.

Civil Aeronautics Board Executive Director Carmelo Arcilla reported earlier this week that the Philippine air panel had secured an additional seven flight frequencies per week to Canada. Up to 14 flights per week are now permitted for each side between the Philippines and Canada. Arcilla noted that Canada is a "very strong" market for the Philippines, with nearly 800,000 Filipinos currently residing in the country.

Philippine Airlines is presently the only carrier flying direct between Canada and the Philippines. It remains unclear whether Air Canada will use their flight entitlements to the Philippines or if Philippine Airlines may borrow them at some point in the future. It was recently revealed that PAL would be downgrading its Canadian routes to the older Airbus A340-300 in September from the current Boeing 777 flagship aircraft that has been operating the route.

Earlier this year, Philippine Airlines announced plans to begin serving US East Coast destinations. As part of the plan, PAL would launch service to New York later this year via Vancouver. Of the fourteen flights weekly that Philippine Airlines is planning to Vancouver, some of the flights are expected to continue on to Toronto or New York. PAL is also currently evaluating service to Chicago and Florida. However, these destinations may be served via South Korea or Japan.

Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines will be filing an application at the Civil Aeronautics Board to secure the recently negotiated entitlements to Canada. Once the application is approved, Philippine Airlines will earn the rights to operate up to fourteen flights per week to Canada from the current seven flights.
