Flights between Manila-Darwin-Brisbane will launch on June 1st operating three times per week while flights between Manila-Darwin-Perth will begin the following day on June 2nd with three weekly services.

The new destinations will complement Philippine Airlines' existing service to Australia which includes the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. The new routes will bring the airline's total weekly capacity up to 7,400 seats weekly between the Philippines and Australia.

The flights will provide added convenience to the some 300,000 Filipinos that are currently living in Australia and the 5,000 Australians that call the Philippines home. Australia is the sixth largest source of tourists to the Philippines and these new flights will undoubtedly help the Philippine government to meet its goal of drawing in 10 million tourists to the country by 2016.

Ramon Ang, President of Philippine Airlines says that the airline's route expansion is concentrated on opening strategic gateways that will allow greater connectivity to more destinations in the region. Philippine Airlines is seeking to turn Manila into a transit hub enabling foreign tourists and business travellers to fly via Manila and stop for a few days or continue onwards by connecticing to Philippine Airlines' network in Asia, Australia, North America, and the Middle East. Ang believes that the country's robust economy, amazing tourist destinations, credit rating upgrades, and geographical advantage make it the ideal jump-off point to connect to other destinations.

But Philippine Airlines isn't the only carrier in hot pursuit of Australia. The Philippines recently renegotiated an agreement permitting new flight entitlements between Manila and Australia's Avalon Airport which serves the city of Melbourne. Although no formal announcements have been made, it is expected that Cebu Pacific will make that its first long haul destination in Australia.
