Cebu Pacific Cancels Cebu-Taipei Route Launch
Cebu Pacific announced this week that it would be postponing the intended launch of flights between Cebu and Taipei until the dispute between the two governments has been resolved. Cebu Pacific announced in April that it would launch service between the two cities on July 5, 2013.
Tensions between the Philippines and Taiwan remain after a Taiwanese fisherman was killed by the Philippine Coast Guard.
A representative of Cebu Pacific said that it would be challenging to launch the route given the current tension as some passengers had already requests refunds and flight changes. The route has indefinitely been suspended.
Cebu Pacific flights between Manila and Taipei will not be affected. The international dispute is having a significant impact on Philippine tourism following the travel alert issued by the Taiwanese government. Budget carrier Zest Air, Philippine Airlines, and China Airlines have all reported flight cancellations as a result of the dispute. The Department of Tourism is trying to make up for the cancellations by appealing to other markets.
