Philippine Airlines Ranks 90th in World Airline Awards, Air Asia Voted Best Low Cost Airline

If Philippine Airlines wants to be a competitive force, the carrier is going to have to do a much better job of convincing the travelling public that it is worthy of flying them. Philippine Airlines was voted as the 90th top airline by passengers in the 2013 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The results were decided based on an annual survey that obtains responses from more than 18 million passengers in 160 countries worldwide. The survey is typically conducted between July and May of each year. Respondents evaluate and judge more than 200 airlines on their performance in the areas of check-in, boarding, seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverage, in-flight entertainment, and staff service.

In the 2013 awards, Dubai-based Emirates ranked first over all of the world's international airlines. That is a significant improvement over the rank of eighth which it placed in the 2012 awards. Qatar Airways ranked second, while Singapore Airlines ranked in third place this year.

"These awards are widely regarded as the industry's benchmark for excellence. For us, the awards clearly reflect a vote of confidence from global travelers, who acknowledge and appreciate our continuous drive to deliver high-quality service," said Tim Clark, President of Emirates. "To be voted, 'World's Best Airline' by millions of discerning travelers really is something for our 60,000 strong workforce to be proud of."

The annual Skytrax awards are conducted on a non-profit basis with rigorous monitoring during the survey process to ensure that there is no external influence or airline involvement. "The reputation of these awards relies on our ability to maintain transparency across the survey and awards format," said Edward Plaisted of Skytrax. "We know that some award-winning airlines are not the favourite of everyone, and we receive vocal feedback and complaints from a few users each year when results are published. However, we can do no more than remind them that award-winning airlines are decided by their fellow airline customers, and not by Skytrax."

Singapore Airlines was voted the Best Airline in Asia while Philippine Airlines didn't even rank in the top ten. AirAsia was voted as the Best Low-Cost Airline Worldwide and in Asia. Cebu Pacific did not rank in the Top 100 World Best Airlines or the Top 10 Best Low-Cost Airlines in Asia.

"It is an honour to be ranked as Asia's and the World's Best Low Cost Airline for the fifth time in a row, and we would like to thank all of our guests for their support," said Tony Fernandes, CEO of the Air Asia Group. "Our journey does not end here, as we strive to make flying even more enjoyable and affordable for our guests in the years to come. We are consistently seeking ways to improve our service in providing world class flying experiences to our guests."

The World Airline Awards has been held since 1999. Philippine travellers can write reviews of their flights with Philippine carriers and share their experience at Philippine Flight Network Airline Reviews.
