Tigerair Philippines has revealed that it is planning to launch a new hub in Cebu. The airline sees the city as a strong brand for travel in the Asia-Pacific region and it intends to mount international and domestic flights to and from Cebu.

"Cebu is a very strong brand in Asia and is known as a favorite destination for business and leisure by Asian tourists," said Olive Ramos, CEO of Tigerair Philippines. "Cebu is very strategic to Tiger Air. We see it as another hub of ours."

The airline currently maintains hubs at Clark International Airport and Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Clark is used as the base for Tigerair's international flights while Terminal 4 in Manila is used for domestic services. The airline also operates the only direct service between Kalibo and Singapore.

According to Ramos, Tigerair will also be participating in an open sky discussion to be held in October along with other Philippine carriers and the Civil Aeronautics Board with the intention of establishing additional flight rights to Japan. Following a recent visit to the Philippines, the Japanese Prime Minister indicated that he was satisfied with the efforts of local aviation authorities to address safety concerns and that discussions between the two countries on a new air agreement may begin. Ramos is optimistic that the open sky discussion will return a positive outcome. The airline will be giving priority to a new route between Cebu and Osaka.

Tigerair Philippines currently operates a fleet of five Airbus aircraft. In early September, the carrier will launch a new route between Manila and Phuket in addition to reinstating services between Clark and Singapore. The airline will operate four weekly flights between the two cities beginning on September 1.

  1. It is important to offer flights where necessary but not to create more overcapacity on certain domestic routes and lose money. However, more competion is always good for the customers. But we already have enough flights and airlines operating for all important domestic routes i think.
