New Multi-Million Bacolod-Silay Airport Road Opened

A new 10.12 kilometer access road has been unveiled in Bacolod City linking the capital of Negros Occidental with the Bacolod-Silay Airport. Previously travellers were forced to use the North Section of the Bacolod Coastal Road that would lead vehicles 15 kilometers northeast of Bacolod resulting in a travel time between 30 and 45 minutes to the airport. With the opening of the new access road, travel time from Bacolod to the airport in Silay has been reduced to just 15 minutes.

"This project will usher us to a new development for the three interlinking cities of Bacolod, Talisay, and Silay," said Alfredo Benitez, Negros Occidental Representative. "This road will dramatically cut travel time to the airport by 30 to 40 minutes."

Vice Governor Eugenio Lacson, representing Governor Alfredo MaraƱon Jr., acknowledged that the project will provide an opportunity for the development of Bacolod, Talisay, and Silay in addition to improving accessibility to the airport. "I congratulate those who convinced the National Government to establish this beautiful and scenic road with workmanship that is of international standard," said Lacson.

Bacolod City Representative Evelio Leonardia proclaimed that the new road would serve as an integration of the three major cities of the province. "This will become a new growth center and we should consider the creation of structures that will integrate the three cities," said Leonardia, the former Mayor of Bacolod.

The cost of the project amounted to P415,893 million for the 10 kilometre road that spans six bridges and five intersections. The project began on February 14, 2012 and was officially completed on November 7, 2013. The project was a partnership of the Philippine Government and the Korea Export-Import Bank that funded the project. Tae Ik Park, Chief Representative of the Korea Export-Import Bank described the project as a "shining symbol of cooperation and friendship between the two countries."

"As a representative of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund of the Korean government, I am very proud and moved that the Economic Development Cooperation Fund could contribute to such a meaningful and important project," said Park. He added that the new road would serve as a milestone for the development of Negros Occidental.

The Economic Development Cooperation Fund was established in 1987 with the goal of sharing Korea's development experience with other developing countries.
