Flight 5J 220 was preparing to take off for Cebu when the nose wheel of the aircraft went off the runway as it was turning to line up for take off. The aircraft's nose wheel ended up on the grassy portion at the end of the runway. Passengers were disembarked from the aircraft safely and re-accommodated on other flights.

According to Anthony de Arca, aircraft accident investigator for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, Butuan Airport would remain closed until 4:00pm on Sunday, February 16. This resulted in the cancellation of three Cebu Pacific flights bound for Butuan from both Manila and Cebu.

One hundred and six crew and passengers were on board the Airbus A319 aircraft registered RP-C3195. Passengers were offered a full refund, complimentary rebooking of flights within 30 days of the original departure date or a re-routing to the nearest alternate airport in Davao or Cagayan de Oro.
