Clark Airport May Become Another Aquino Airport

A bill has been put forth to the Joint Transportation, Government Enterprise, and Privatization Committee to rename Clark International Airport as Corazon C. Aquino International Airport. The Clark International Airport Authority would also be renamed the Corazon C. Aquino International Airport Authority.

The primary proponent of the bill is Pampanga Representative Joseller Guiao, an ally of President Aquino. He is trying to push the bill through before President Aquino steps down in mid-2016. Bren Guiao, father of Joseller, was a long serving Pampanga Governor first appointed by President Cory Aquino following the first Edsa revolution.

What remains unclear is why Guiao is pushing for the renaming of the airport when the Aquino and Cojuangco families have no direct ties to the area. According to Guiao, Cory Aquino International Airport will be the next premier gateway to the Philippines with congestion problems continuing to persist at the existing Aquino airport in Manila.

If people had been led to believe that naming rights went out of fashion in Philippine politics a long time ago, one only needs to revisit 2003 when Clark Airport was first renamed the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in honour of her father. When the last Macapagal left office, the name reverted back to Clark International Airport.

Guiao may be somewhat of an Aquino fanatic as he is also pushing through another bill that calls for the renaming of the Clark free trade zone to the "Cory Aquino Freeport Zone." If renamed, the Clark Development Corporation would become the Corazon C. Aquino Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority.

Meanwhile, President Aquino has not issued any comments on the proposed bills. He is scheduled to visit Kuala Lumpur on February 27 and 28 when he will literally board the last PAL flight to Malaysia. Philippine Airlines is dropping its four weekly flights between Manila and Kuala Lumpur after relaunching them less than one year ago.

  1. This is the height of ridicule. Macapagal was an almost do nothing president. Cory was a less than do nothing president who achieved only two things: helping the friends of her family enrich themselves and hiding under her desk when bombs went off.
Clark Field is Clark Field, period. Just like MIA is MIA and not Ninny Aquino International.
