Government Considers Options for Location of New Manila Airport

The Philippine government is still considering its options on the location of a new international airport to replace the congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The ageing airport complex has been voted as one of the world's worst airports for the last few consecutive years.

According to Transportation Secretary Jun Abaya, the Department of Transportation and Communications will consider the proposals submitted by the San Miguel Corporation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in identifying the possible location of a new airport. 

The San Miguel Corporation proposed to construct a $10 billion airport in a reclaimed area along Manila Bay currently owned by CyberBay, while JICA proposed Sangley Point, a former US naval base, in Cavite as a possible new airport location. Abaya says that once the proposals have been finalized, feasibility studies will be conducted. He added that the San Miguel Corporation has yet to formally present complete details of their project including the design.

According to Ramon Ang, President of San Miguel Corporation and Philippine Airlines, the company is presently studying offers from various conglomerates interested in partnering with the company to construct the $10-billion Manila Bay airport. The interested parties include Tessie Sy of SM Investments Corporation, Lance Gokongwei of JG Summit Holdings, and Enrique Razon of International Container Terminal Services. "I am thinking about it," said Ang. He added that although San Miguel Corporation could handle financing of the entire project, it was willing to invite other businessmen to participate in the project. 

Meanwhile, the Philippine government has confirmed that any proposals to transfer all operations from NAIA to Clark International Airport will not be entertained. However, the government is interested in developing Clark further to help decongest NAIA. The Department of Transportation and Communications is currently preparing to submit a proposal for a P7.2 billion low-cost carrier terminal to be built at Clark International Airport.

  2. The long suffering Filipinos can only wish that something constructive will come out of this talk of building, considering, planning, etc, etc., etc. of that badly needed new international gateway.
    They can't seem to agree on something how much more shall we expect these people to act together and do something positive.

It's only a matter of time that Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar premier gateways will humble and scorn at Manila's decrepit and shameful NAIA lest these brainless and visionless people charged with its operation realise that a newer, bigger and futuristic airport is badly needed to replace the"Worst Airport in the World"

  6. Because most of our politicians (well, not all maybe) do not know how to run the country. They are incompetent and wasting their time involving on pork barrel scam. That's what we got on electing these people. Look at NAIA 3, it's not even an airport, it is just a terminal. Can you imagine how messy was that before it came to this far? It's like a disaster, and was totally mis-managed! The construction was started in 1997 and expected to complete in 2002. To this far, the cost was even way more expensive than the world class airport, but it is just a terminal. Finally it will be fully opened (hopefully) so other international airlines can be moved, but still have pending cases though. But how long did it take? 16 years to be fully implemented for just a terminal? not a whole airport? I hope our government can learn from this mistake. But we cannot be 100% sure of that. The new manila airport could be even worse than what happened to naia terminal 3, if they are not going to do their job well.
