Philippine Airlines Scales Back Airbus Order

In the midst of reporting its first profit in years, Philippine Airlines has revealed that it will not purchase as many aircraft as originally ordered with Airbus under its massive fleet renewal program. According to a filing submitted to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the airline announced that it will not exercise an option to acquire eight of the twenty A321neo aircraft that it ordered in 2012.

As part of a massive fleet overhaul, Philippine Airlines announced in 2012 that it was planning to acquire up to 100 new aircraft. Consequently, it signed two purchase agreements with aircraft manufacturer Airbus. In the first purchase agreement, Philippine Airlines ordered 44 A320 aircraft with options for up to 20 A321neo aircraft to be delivered between 2014 to 2020. As part of the second agreement, Philippine Airlines placed a firm order for 10 A330-300 aircraft and options for an additional 10 for delivery between 2014 and 2016. 

However, PAL first decided to scale back its order last March when it advised Airbus that it would only take 15 of the original 20 A330 aircraft on order. Most recently, Philippine Airlines decided to drop an option to acquire 8 A321neo aircraft of the previously ordered 20 A321 aircraft. However, the airline agreed to purchase eight of the aircraft with an option until 2017 to exercise its right to purchase the remaining four A321neo from the original order. 

Of the up to 84 aircraft that Philippine Airlines agreed to purchase from Airbus, the carrier is now set to accept delivery of 67 with the possibility of adding 4 A321 aircraft by 2017. As of the end of June 2014, Philippine Airlines had accepted delivery of 17 aircraft including 10 A330 and 7 A321 aircraft. That leaves 1 A321 due to arrive and 5 additional A330. 

The Philippine Airlines fleet is presently composed of 85 aircraft including PAL Express aircraft. It is composed of six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, four Boeing 747-400, ten A340-300, eighteen A330-300, seven A321-200, twenty-eight A320-200, three A319, five Bombardier Dash 8-Q400, and four Bombardier Dash 8-Q300. However, twenty of those aircraft are set to retire including the four Boeing 747-400 that have been the carrier's flagship for several years. 

The fleet modernisation is part of an attempt by San Miguel Corporation to transform Philippine Airlines into "Asia's airline of choice" with one of the youngest fleets in the region at just 3.5 years. However, sceptics are questioning the bare cabin configuration of the new aircraft that do not feature any in-flight entertainment, while other carriers in the region continue to upgrade their cabins and on-board amenities. While the move may be successful in generating profits in the short-term, it remains to be seen whether it will be successful creating passenger loyalty and satisfaction in the long-term. 

Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines is still planning to launch new services to the United States and Europe pending the outcome of the present ownership dispute between Lucio Tan and San Miguel Corporation. Prior to the dispute, Philippine Airlines had planned to launch new flights to New York, Chicago, Florida, and San Diego, after expanding existing services to Guam, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In addition, the carrier would like to launch more direct flights to Europe serving the cities of Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome after launching London in November 2013.

    1. I agree, I live in Toronto and I will continue to fly with PAL as long as they use their B777 to Toronto. But as soon as they change it to the old A340... I'm gonna have to say... Adios!

  3. PALpak talaga PAL simulat sapul. Halos isang taon since they launched London flight pero walang pa ding nadagdag sa kanilang ambisyon na magkaroon ng flights sa Europe.

    1. How can they add flights to Europe, when they don't have the appropriate equipments to do so. And this is what I don't understand with PAL, they are forcing to expand their long haul routes when they don't even have enough planes that can be appropriately deployed to these additional long haul routes.

    3. PAL should never have thought about expansion of its international routes before they got their ordered aircraft (and even these will be without IFE). Cutting costs is okay for domestic and perhaps even regional routes, but management is quite clearly clueless as to what is required for long-haul routes. Filipinos living in Europe have become acustomed to travelling to MNL on highly rated airlines and quite frankly PAL is not going to cut it. Offering a direct flight will not convince these Filipinos, nor any potential tourists.

    4. On another note, unlike Delta and United, which is introducing these wireless options across their fleets, PAL is only putting them on the A330. Not even on regional A321 or A340 aircraft and who knows how long people will have to tolerate the A340....KLM just gave their 747's a cabin refresh and installed larger personal entertainment screens in Business Class even though they plan to retire their 747 fleet in a few years -- likely 2020. At least, they care about their passengers rather than their wallets...

  5. PAL can have i-pad for rent also on their a340 and PAL In Air wireless internet and cellphone signal. PAL should have a charging area for those who will bring their own i-pads because batteries may run out for long haul flights even if fully charged.

    3. The CNN reports describes how United and Delta are introducing wireless entertainment options and it suggests that in the future, airlines may convert to a 100% wireless system. However, that is NOT happening yet and Delta is by no means phasing out seat back screens on long-haul flights but rather introducing both methods of entertainment. PAL, on the other hand, went ahead and wiped out all screens from their aircraft, even before LCC's in the US made the move! The point is -- the industry may go in this direction one day -- but it's not going there yet as proven by Delta and United....the fact that PAL already did just makes them look cheap alongside their competitors...

  6. PAL can have "PAL in air player" (for watching movies, TV shoes, inflight magazine) for a340 and a330 flights. I hope it will remain to be free because other carriers have free IFE installed in their seats.

  10. why care so much about pal when u have many other airlines from Manila to Europe/Us? and those airlines have much better product offering and reasonable prices.. thats what the gulf airlines are here for. cheap prices and outstanding service and food quality. ever tried Qatar or Emirates? both have 5star airport and facilities..

  12. If you want to pamper yourself or reward yourself after working so hard here or abroad, look for an airline where you will feel like you are royalty. That airline is not PAL.

    1. That is exactly the point. That is what people do. But the question is, why shouldn't that be PAL? Why is PAL trying to chase LCC business from Cebu Pacific when they can chase premium business from their superior full service competitors?
