“What’s a future market?”

That was my initial reaction when I learned about Saturday Future Market @ Escolta. (Whew! That was a mouthful!)  Are they going to sell futuristic stuff? Turns out it’s a flea market that sells things from the past but they also feature the works of fledgling artists so off I went to see what the future holds.

The Future Market is held every month at the ground floor of First United Building, Escolta Street, Manila. There’s no sign board to indicate the event so you would need to look for the building which is actually easy to find.

As soon as I saw people milling around an old building, I knew that was it. This is the open area entrance.

But if you want more “class,” you enter through the main gate.

And to your right is the unassuming door to the future…

… that looks like a cleaner version of “Mad Max.”

The turntable actually works! It was the pipe-in music of the market.

I wish copies of Wakasan, Lovelife and Aliwan komiks were available.

Do they still make songhits? Songhits is a popular magazine type from the 70s featuring the lyrics and chords of the most popular songs.

What’s a flea market without clothes?

Not all were selling for profit such as this one. Another booth was raising funds for a cancer-stricken friend.

Original Creations

This is what I came for. I wanted to see how creative and artistic the next generation is.

This was one of the most memorable. Art work made from pipes.

Meet the artist whose name I failed to get as I was too busy marvelling at his works. I asked him how he came up with the idea as I had never seen anything like it. He just gave a sheepish smile and shrugged his shoulders. Somebody from the background shouted, “It just came to him.” Now that’s what I call a true artist.

Aerial photography may not be a new concept but it’s nice to see a thesis subject being put to good use.

Art work with a sense of humor

This was my best find. Miniature journals slash accessories that the artist created from scratch!

And according to Trisha, you can actually write on them! Of course, your entries might be limited to one emoticon per page. Truly a combination of art, sense of humor and cuteness! I issued her a challenge to create a book next time which she accepted.

A friend of mine later asked what kind of people attended the market.

It was only then that I realized that it was mostly people in their 20s.

People in their 20s that care for art…

…and for reading! If this is the next generation that will lead our nation, the future’s looking bright that we all gotta wear shades.
