Air Canada Prepares for Philippine Airlines' New York Flights

As Philippine Airlines prepares to launch its first new destination in the United States in more than a decade, Air Canada is already making counter offensive moves of its own. With Philippine Airlines about to launch service to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport via Vancouver next year, Air Canada is re-aligning its New York service shifting its daily flight from Newark Airport to JFK.

Although it remains unclear how aggressively Philippine Airlines plans to sell seats between Vancouver and New York JFK Airport, the decision by Air Canada adds yet another competitive element on what is becoming a highly competitive route. Air Canada will terminate its Vancouver to Newark flights and begin flying to New York JFK Airport beginning on May 1, 2015.

Air Canada's daily flights will be operated by an A319 jet. The eastbound service departs Vancouver at 9:00am, arriving in JFK at 5:23pm. The westbound service departs JFK at 6:10pm and arrives back in Vancouver at 9:17pm. Previously, flights between Vancouver and Newark operated overnight but Air Canada recently rescheduled the flight to operate during the day.

Passengers travelling on Air Canada from JFK will enjoy convenient connections to Air Canada's network in Western Canada and Asia including cities such as Nagoya, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo, and Osaka.

Although Air Canada does not presently serve Manila, passengers can access Manila through an interline agreement with Cathay Pacific where passengers board an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong, connecting to a Cathay Pacific service to Manila

Passengers travelling between Vancouver and New York on Air Canada will be served by Air Canada's 112-seat Airbus A319 aircraft featuring an Executive and Economy Class. Earlier this year, Air Canada was voted the Best Airline in North America for the fifth year in a row at the annual Skytrax World Airline Awards.

Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines continues to prepare for the launch of its new flights from Manila to New York JFK via Vancouver. The service is set to commence on March 15, 2015, marking the airline's much awaited expansion to the east coast of the United States. The new route will operate four times weekly aboard an Airbus A340-300. The aircraft seats 36 passengers in Business Class and 218 in Economy Class. When it launches, the New York route will become PAL's longest route at 14,501 kilometres, representing 16.5 hours of flying time.

The Philippine Airlines flight from Vancouver to New York will depart every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 10:50pm, arriving at JFK at 7:00am the following day. The return service to Vancouver will depart every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11:00am, arriving back in Vancouver at 1:50pm.

At present, nearly half a million Filipinos reside on the US East Coast with more than 253,000 in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area alone. Filipinos on the East Coast of the US account for 15 percent of the total US Filipino population.

Air Canada and Philippine Airlines will be competing with Cathay Pacific, which currently offers a daily non-stop service between Vancouver and JFK at nearly identical arrival and departure times as that of Philippine Airlines. Delta Airlines also competes between Vancouver and JFK on a seasonal basis, while United Airlines operates seasonal service from Vancouver to Newark.

John F. Kennedy Airport is located in Queens Borough, approximately fifteen miles to midtown Manhattan. The airport offers convenient connections to the New York subway system.

  1. Too bad PR stopped YVR-LAS flights, that was a lovely trip we went on a few years ago. Class act!

    1. And PR did not have a top-seed airline competitor except Korean Air (in that Las Vegas market)! Now (to NYC) it as to fiercely compete with CX, Air Canada, UAL and Delta. Whew!!!!

    2. Why leave a growing market where loyal Filipinos are? My gosh, PAL just handed the baton to Korean Air, which I admire (inflight services, etc), love (the economy food, flowing juices and drinks) and trust (on-time performance 99% and modern 777 or A380 jets). I am sure Cebu Pacific is reading my blog!. I am a loyal Pinoy, by the way!

    3. It is not a stroke of bad luck but bad airline management. Seriously!

    4. And PR had also a traffic right on LAS to Vancouver route, so there was no problem with unused seats on that flight sector. I should know, I was a passenger too!l

    5. Besides, Canadians and Alaskans preferred to fly A340 widebody (PAL) compared to 737 (WestJet Air) or A320 (Air Canada)! Philippine Airlines,,,,,,,,,,WHY???????????

    6. Canadians are spend-thrift and were always looking for deals. As part of the bilateral, PAL was not allowed to undercut Air Canada's pricing which was a problem. Also, AC flew daily, whereas PAL was only 4 x a week which sometimes did not fit in the schedules of local traffic. And PAL's biggest disadvantage was that it did not have US Customs pre-clearance in Vancouver. Same with CX for their YVR-JFK, but their stellar reputation supersedes this minor inconvenience and their YVR-JFK flight is generally regarded as the most luxurious transcontinental service in North America. PAL will not have this kind of reputation.

I think people also tend to overlook that these flights with stops have higher costs from an operational standpoint. The airline will have to overnight their crews in Vancouver, and since LAS was not daily, as will be JFK, sometimes they had to spend 2-3 nights in YVR before crewing the "shuttle" flights as they are known. It was not common for crews to have a 6-day trip to complete MNL-YVR-LAS-YVR-MNL. YYZ and JFK will be even more expensive since these flights are not turnaround for the crews, which means they overnight in both YVR & YYZ or JFK. That is a lot of cost for the airline.

    7. Talking about Las Vegas to Vancouver PAL flight only. Canadians and Western USA residents preferred wide-bodied jets and so do you! Otherwise, something is very wrong... I won't mess up with your thinking! Happy Holidays, anyway!

    8. I am a Canadian (of Filipino descent) living in Vancouver, and believe me people do not care if it's widebody or not. They care about cheap fares. I certainly did not care about the aircraft type. What I cared about was that by flying with local carriers, I cleared US customs & immigration in YVR, and breeze through arrivals as a domestic pax in LAS. And this is the convenience that PAL could never offer. Trust me, NO ONE apart from die hard Pinoys care much for PAL, NO ONE! Open your eyes and be globally-minded! Not the typical villager aka barangay mentality!

    1. All flights to Manila from NYC are called direct flights because they always stop in one, two or three cities for aviation gasoline, pick up extra passengers and some other logical or weird reasons. Listen again, there is no non-stop flight NYC to MNL as of today 12/8/14.

    2. Right! Singapore Airlines tried to fly non-stop from NYC (Newark) to Singapore but did not continue it after a short period of time. Why?
Ask Singapore Airlines, one of the top three best airlines of the planet earth! Or just use logic!

      Delete
    3. Because most US airlines are just 3-star airlines. A 5-star Singapore Airlines is not appealing to the Americans as they are just happy with the basic necessities. Americans have historical ties with the Philippines which will make Manila a preferred destination. Fare & pricing is the Key to success

    4. I think the non stop SQ flight between EWR-SIN was an all business class configuration and was not able to maintain it due to low yield n if PR wants to fly non stop MNL - JFK then good luck!

    5. @8:07 AM
Yes, yes, yes. PAL's key to success is FARE and PRICING. Why fly PAL to MNL for $1,050 round trip when Asiana Airlines offers the same route for $835? And if you are a member of UA's Mileage Plus, you can also earn Mileage Plus points because Asiana is a top seed member of Star Alliance! Why the big difference in fares Philippine Airlines?? I need an answer so I can plan to go back to you?? I am a FilAm from the West Coast of USA.

  3. SQ was collecting a one way fare US$5-9K per passenger on the EWR nonstop and it was full every weekend - the fuel costs on the A340 (the same planes PAL got used from Iberia) killed the flight.

    ReplyDelete
  4. That is very true! same experience for Thai airways from BKK to JFK. Filled the seats but could still not meet the cost of fuel and crew...These were truly "nonstop" flights not the MNL-YVR-JFK that PR is proposing....Also those 340's had new interiors not not old iberia decrepit seats and no IFE... CX here i come or KAL or DL or Air canada

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We hope PR will survive this route considering competition n the usage of these 4holers despite of declining global oil prices

      Delete
  5. Other airlines like SQ and CX hedged their fuel and the effect of the decline in the cost of fuel is neutral to their bottom line. PAL did not hedge their fuel requirement as they buy directly and the effect to their bottom line will be a profit margin of 50% to 60%. So PAL will be better off competing with SQ and CX or other airlines who hedged their fuel requirements. If PAL is smart enough it can take advantage of this favorable condition.

    2. Iberia's airplanes are fully maintained and "protected even on the airport gate". My great buddy was an airline mechanic for Iberia's DC-10 aircrafts in Jeddah (middle 80s) and he used to tell me about Iberia's management compared to a "mother lion fiercely protecting her newborn". Besides, there is always a Spanish "konyo" connection between Iberia and PAL......don't you think so? By the way, "konyo" is a Manila street term referring to Spanish Filipinos of Phillip the 2nd's colony. And no offense to the real meaning of the slang (word) because Spain and Philippines are still Catholic countries.

    1. RSA will lose but not PAL since PAL is buying directly from petron at currect cost which is now lower. Long term contract of petron is only to be a supplier of fuel at prevailing market price. Petron will lose and not PAL

  10. Dont call people idiots.... The 777 of course can be used on short high density routes but you need to understand the cost of an airplane and the cycles you put on it... The 777 is a great long haul airplane and will make money, it can be used for short haul but why would you do that when you have 4 A330 with high density seating sitting on the tarmac. The RSA group understood that better than the current management....

    1. Air Canada need not worry about PAL. Their A319 on this route has more bells & whistles than PAL's A340. For those who are looking for quality on this route, they will fly CX. PAL will be an afterthought. It will rely on the budget traveler, especially with a less-than-daily schedule, and practically non-existent frequent flyer base over there.

      Delete
    2. It makes sense for AC to stay away from traffic-laden JFK because Star Alliance top-seed United Air dominates EWR Airport. This means more airport assistance are more clout for AC's ground handling and other needs.

  13. Even if PAL lowers its fares that would match "LCC types", it is still difficult to travel from NYC to MNL via Vancouver on A340 because of the hassles involved in making connections and technical landings in Guam or HNL. Too bad for PAL, I prefer to fly Korean Air (A380) and Delta (B777) because I will only make connection once, i.e., Seoul for KE or Tokyo for DL. I am a senior citizen now, so you can't blame me, PAL.

  29. A Course in Miracles: The Message:
A Course in Miracles the message teaches us that there is a Voice for God in our minds that is always talking to us, telling us that we are: unlimited, one with all life, eternal, and literally invulnerable. That Voice is the Holy Spirit. There is another voice in our minds that we made up that lies to us and tells us we are: limited, separate, mortal, and vulnerable. That voice is the ego. A primary focus of a course in miracle’s message is to teach us how to tell these two voices apart. Once we do that we must choose to listen to the Holy Spirit and trust the Holy Spirit's counsel. We will always hear the voice of the ego while here in the dream but we should not accept its guidance or counsel about anything. In a course in miracle the message is not about the death of the ego, but how to properly relate to it.Frances Xu
