Philippine Airlines Makes Major Adjustments to London, Introduces New York Service

If the latest timetables by Airlineroute.net are to be believed, the month of March will see significant additions and adjustments to Philippine Airlines' long-haul services.

Effective March 2, Philippine Airlines will mostly see a reduction of its flights between Manila and London from 5 to 4 times per week.  However, the departure time from Manila will be timed in such a way to depart shortly after lunch instead of its previous early morning time slots.

The outbound flight, PR720, departs Manila on Monday, Friday and Sunday at 12.45 pm and arrives in London Heathrow at 9.00 pm.  PR720 also flies on Wednesday but departs Manila slightly earlier at 12.40 pm and arrives at 8.55 pm.  Its return flight counterpart, PR721 will then depart London on the same day at 10.55 pm and then arrive back in Manila the following day at 8.05 pm.

During the period covering April 11 to May 2 however, the flag carrier will operate an additional Saturday flight, PR722.  This flight departs Manila at 7.20 am and arrive in London at 3.35 pm.  The return flight, PR723, will depart London at 6.25 pm and arrive in Manila at 3.45 pm on Sundays.

All these London flights are to continue being operated by an Airbus A340-300.

In an interview with Asia Travel Tips, Philippine Airlines country manager for Thailand Josh Vasquez admitted that the Manila-London flight as well as the wider European market has been quite challenging for them and that the flag carrier has been "hanging in there".

UPCOMING MANILA-NEW YORK FLIGHTS
However, Vasquez also said the flag carrier was happy to announce its upcoming flight to New York.  Philippine Airlines will start flying there on March 15.  Given that half a million Filipinos live on the east coast of the US, Vasquez said that their upcoming flight will be a welcome development for them as well as Filipinos who have friends on the east coast.

PR126 departs Manila on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11.45 pm and arrives in New York's JFK airport the following day at 7.30 am.  The return leg, PR127 departs New York on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 11.00 am.  All flights will have a stopover in Vancouver where Philippine Airlines has full traffic rights between that city and New York.  These flights will also use an Airbus A340-300.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Philippine Airlines President Jaime Bautista, who said the flag carrier is not keen on expanding in Europe, planning instead to focus more on markets like the United States and building its presence there.  Bautista returned to becoming PAL President after Lucio Tan regained full control of PAL from Ramon Ang's San Miguel Corporation.  Under Ang's leadership, massive expansion plans also included more flights to Europe.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS FOR PHILIPPINES-EUROPE FLIGHTS
Despite apparently challenging scenarios for direct Philippines-Europe flights experienced by Philippine Airlines and other carriers, a new player is set to enter.  On March 30, Turkish Airlines will launch flights between Istanbul and Manila, which is initially set for three times weekly.  This development marks the first time since the 1990s that a European carrier enters the Philippine market.  Since then, European carriers have gradually left the Philippines leaving KLM the sole European carrier serving the country.  Turkish Airlines' entry also marks the first time since 2012 that a European carrier will be flying nonstop between the Philippines and any point in Europe.  Given the flight's arrival time in Istanbul as well as Istanbul's location on the map, passengers on the flight can make convenient connections to most major cities in Europe without "backtracking".

  1. I live on the East Coast but will probably never consider flying PAL. I admire PAL but flying for about 15 hours on an A340 is not my idea of a comfortable flight. I will still chose ANA over PAL anytime! Just saying.

Flying in an outdated aircraft and paying top dollar for the flight is a nonstarter when there are better alternatives out there. It seems you think that Pinoys will fly with you just becuase you are PAL it does not work that way.

Give people a good product comparable to the ME3, CX and SQ. It that too much too ask?

    7. And do not fool people that your A340 is a state of the art aircraft because Airbus Industries has stopped manufacturing it after the year 2011. I am not giving you the reason....you have to research for it, if you want!

    9. Mr. Bautista, the best thing for you to do for PAL is to radically change some major things like exchanging A340 to A380 and use it to the Manila/USA route. This route is very critical to PAL's survival. Hold on to your grip on (Pinoy) loyal passengers as Cebu Pacific will be competing eye for an eye, teeth for teeth. Public clamor against the A340 is sounding very deep, so a slight mistake here means business downfall. Lessen 777 economy seats to 9 abreast so that you can compete with other popular Asian carriers for the US and European routes. Good luck!

  2. The change of PAL's arrival time in London of wouldn't help in their no. of passengers on heir London route. They haven't considered passengers with connecting domestic or internarional flights or even those with long bus or train journey fr London to reach their final destination. This goes the
same with passengers arriving late in Manila. The very late arrival time would mean to some having to stay longer at airport or find overnight accommodation before they could travel to their final destination. So inconvenient esp to those with luggages, with work or appointment the next day and the added cost of acco. A little bit daunting as well if you are travelling on your own and arriving late at night on an unfamiliar
place. PAL's only advantage to other airlines flying to Manila is that it's a non-stop flight but since they have downgraded their planes to the A340-300 some passengers are willing to forego this advantage for a better plane and
better flight times offered by other carriers.

I have no idea how to solve this, but it is a very serious matter ....from flunking beauty pageant questions in English to world English forum...it is very disheartening. Gone are the days when Pinoys excelled well. Now, their present generation think they can survive speaking their Pilipino or Tagalog abroad! No wonder, to pass nursing exams abroad, Pinoys have to undergo testing in spoken English or Phonetics. Tell Noynoy to imperatively send back English (and Spanish) to all schools, public and private! Scary reality for a country with 100 million population who want to send its people abroad just to escape poverty and to earn hard currency to stay afloat!

I would rather take Middle Eastern airlines and pay extra monies, take 3-6 hours of waiting in the airport but with convenience. Flying to PAL seems you are riding in a Aircon Provincial Bus. Bus is much better because they have TV infront but PAL has nothing to offer during the flight.

Why do you always have to complain about our state of the art Airbus A340?

      Delete
    2. Did I say any particular aircraft above? My complain is the services of PAL. You are the Asia's Sunniest during 80's but now, you are lagging behind. Instead of improving your cabin configuration, you opted to be LCL carrier instead of Legacy carrier. Flying 8-10 Hours without entertainment system, while your competitors in the same route upgraded their services not to mention your ARROGANT & unethical flight crew.

      Delete
    3. Not all flight crew of PAL have negative attitudes. Actually, they are trying to compete with the crew of some 5-star carriers from Asia. Otherwise, if problems continue, their jobs, too, are at a stake, don't you think?. Give chance to PAL again!

    5. Next time report it right away to International Air Transport Association (IATA). It is against the law to starve passengers on board a flight (especially if you have a disability, you are pregnant, ill, etc.) Long-haul LCC airlines like Air Berlin and Aer Lingus always provide free meal and free drink to every passenger. Second helping would have to be purchased. Drinking water is always free. That's the rule and the law! For your info, those LCC carriers in Europe are making moolah or what you call "datung" in your dialect!

  6. Ever since PAL is so ambitious to fly to NY and European routes considering our country services to the foreigners in all aspects like aircrafts, airport and the traffic is worst and way back behind than other countries. So sad but this problems need to be blame by our corrupt government.

  7. From the start - analysts predicted the downfall of this flight. Inconsistent service and bad timings lead to a money losing route. You'd be better off throwing that plane onto a nonstop into North America where people will buy your product.

  8. Mr. Bautista, better order 787 Dreamliners for New York and London while it is early. Or better still, order the new A350 (a counterpart of B787). Even if you deploy your 777, it is still uncomfortable because the seating arrangement for economy is 3-4-3 which is similar to 747 which is a real jumbo jet. As I have said, I am loyal to PAL but if Korean Air provides good service and an A380, you cannot convince me to fly PAL Come on, earn your money by patiently matching the products of CX, SQ, KE which unfortunately serve the London and NYC routes to connect to Manila. Do it now before Cebu Pacific starts taking off to USA!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Very disappointing to see and learn about PAL's new flight plans to North America utilizing A340. I find it suicidal for PAL to do it that way without thinking of the competition. 7. Regarding air fares, do not rely much from the website. If you think they are expensive, find consolidators or wholesalers in your area. These are big time travel agents who get bulk or group tickets from their contract airline and they sell them cheap to the public.
Why do I know about this? I had worked with a reputable Pinoy consolidator in Los Angeles and we sold bulk tickets to everybody who wanted to save money. I will not tell the airlines here, for goodness sake! For the record, if a round trip flight costs $1,000, you can buy it from $650 to $700. The consolidator's profit margin is huge, so haggle and haggle like an Ilocano (no offense). And if a low-cost carrier matches such low fares, it is advantageous to buy from the consolidators of legacy airlines, you know the reasons, of course!

    8. I'm not sure where r u from. It depends. June is the start of summer vacation here in LA and kids are off from school. Of course it is cheaper if ur flying from LA to Mamasapano. Or if ur flying during the Yolanda huricane season. That's not the point. You would want to travel on the right time and place. Of course your other option is to book one year ahead of time to these travel agents in the Filipino community like nearer to seafood city, but they have their own rockets too like puting u to waiting list and at the end ur paying too expensive. I know a lot of travel agents here that have closed their businesses because they cannot compete to the online market.... and i would like to save time with the comfort of my computer rather than bargaining with these travel agents.

    13. You are now detected as Pinoy canto boy and not a Hongkong businessman. If you are jobless, go find a job at Cebu Pacific...they would be very glad to help you there... Bye forever, Mr. Kanto.

    14. Job at Cebu Pathetic? HAHAHA. You make me laugh. You should stop sucking the dick of Cebu Pacific because it makes your brain more malfunctioning.

My name is not Mr. Kanto, my name is Mr. Hong Kong. Get it right you stupid shit.

Wala siyang ambiance na negosyante dahil and lingo niya ay puro basura at kung intsik siya ay hindi ganyan umasta; isang peke talaga, so pabayaan niyo nang magmura nang magmura dahil may sakit iyan sa utak.

    5. Probably because the white color reflects light coming from the sun, thus absorbing less heat. Also, planes in dominant white appear "lighter" than those aren't. Or, airline companies would just want their "tails" to stand out.

  20. I don't understand why people complain about the A-340. Lufthansa and other major airlines still use the A-340 but no one seem to complain about them. Everybody is saying they want a more advanced aircraft but as passengers all you do is sit and eat on the aircraft. Unless ur a pilot or an engineer that actually work on the aircraft you wouldnt even know the advances of the aircraft. The A-340 seats are actually wider than the ones they have on there B-777. The only problem i have is the IFE. Other than that food is good they even serve full meals on toronto to vancouver flights. Taking Air Canada on that route you have to pay for your food. Hong Kong to Manila you only get a chicken wrap and a drink in Cathay Pacific. In PAL on the same route serves a full meal. One person even commented that they would rather take korean air because its safer. Korean air actually has one of the worst safety records. Dont even get me started with Asiana on there more "advanced B777 thats newer than the A-340" that cant even land on a runway with clear weather. Philippine Airlines had an event when a terrorist blew one of its 747. The crew actually landed the aircraft safely even though the aircraft was damaged. If a crew can land a plane safely even though they blew a bomb in the plane i would go for that airline and go home to Philippines safely and be able to see my family. Business Class is also cheaper in PAL than other airlines. Toronto to Manila is around $4500-5500 other airlines cost up to $8000-10000 with a stop over hong kong. Fly safe everybody because thats where it really counts.

    1. Tama ka.majority of the passengers doesnt know about 777 and 340 and clueless about it. I fly pal because its cheaper compare to korean air or cathay.i saw it in history channel about pal aircraft blown up by terrorist but still managed to land in oki awa,japan....asiana airlines of korea with their brand new boeing 777 crash land in san francisco 2 years ago.

    2. As Lufthansa is now receiving deliveries of B747-800s (longer new version), it is replacing its A340s.

  21. PAL should not compare itself with the likes of Cathay Pacific, Asiana Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa Airlines, Korean Airlines. PAL is 1 to 2 floors lower than these prestigious airlines. PAL is being criticized because it is charging high air fares as if PAL is in the same league as these prestigious airlines when in fact PAL is not. Of course, people expect to have the basic amenities like an IFE on long flights like to Europe and USA when they pay an expensive ticket such as the one PAL is selling. Many are disappointed with PAL because only when people are on board do they learn that the expensive ticket they paid did not include an IFE on long flights. PAL should make it clear in its online portal that some flights do not have IFE so people will know and not be deceived. It is standard for legacy airlines like PAL to offer IFE on long flights. PAL does not have a monopoly on safety. Prestigious airlines have much more safety systems in place than PAL has.

  22. code share flights in Europe, middle east can be considered. Better yet, PAL's excess planes can be rented out to the code share partners.

  25. Thats why i use qatar airways, i get what i pay for. Its cheaper than most legacy airlines, newer airplanes, a brand new world class terminal in Doha. I dont even want to get off the plane when i fly with them... Unlike pal where everything is below average when comparing to legacy carriers with sam price

  26. Philippine Airline try the 747-8i and A380. Upgrade you premium economy (example: cradle seat) and put it on all jumbos. You also can be the only domestic Philippine airline to have business class on all A320 routes. Also try first class.

    1. First class dont really work on domestic service...

  27. Apply for a reimbursement, if not refund, when the flight of Philippine airline has no IFE, as that IFE service is included in the cost of the air ticket.

    1. Come on, Filipinos! You should inspire PAL more so that it can solve its economic problems at hand! Isn't it better if your country will see lots of airline businesses owned and operated by your own countrymen? Progress starts from this type of capitalistic competitions! Stop the real "crab mentality" that is poisoning your country's progress. Help one another!

  33. PAL is making a lot of savings because of the 65% drop in fuel cost. Yet PAL is not passing the savings to the passengers because PAL is not discounting the price of its ticket. PAL is not even putting the savings to good use by putting IFE on its long flights.

    1. No, but thanks, anyway. I will fly PAL's B777s or A330s and A380s only. I will also fly PAL's B777s if it reduces the Y seating configuration from 3-4-3 to 3-3-3 ONLY. Nine abreast is what you can find from prestigious Asian airlines serving USA to Asia. Google them all so you will believe it! Example: KE, OZ, CX, SQ, Eva Air , ANA, JL
