After suffering through congested conditions at Caticlan Airport and Kalibo International Airport, travellers bound for Boracay Island are eagerly anticipating completion of the new Caticlan-Boracay Airport. San Miguel Corporation, which is managing the airport project, expects the first phase of the development project to be completed in 2016.
The diversified conglomerate expects that the runway extension from 950 meters to 1,800 meters will be completed in 2016. This will enable the airport to handle aircraft as large as the Airbus A320 and direct flights from cities all over the Philippines and North Asia. The secondary phase involves the construction of a newer and larger passenger terminal with new parking bays to accommodate more aircraft.
San Miguel Corporation is also planning to develop the area surrounding the airport to provide services and accommodations for tourists visiting Boracay Island. Caticlan Airport is currently the seventh busiest airport in the Philippines.
