Philippine Airlines and China Airlines Forge Codeshare Agreement

Taiwanese carrier China Airlines joins a growing list of foreign carriers that have recently inked reciprocal code-share agreements with national flag carrier, Philippine Airlines. The most recent agreement, which was signed last December, now provides Philippine Airlines with a code-share partner on services between Manila and Taipei, as well as a partner from every major airline alliance.

Code-share flights operated by China Airlines began on December 1. China Airlines-operated flights CI701/702 will correspond to Philippine Airlines-marketed flights PR871/872, while flights CI703/704 will correspond with PR873/874. Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines-operated flights PR896 and PR899 will correspond to China Airlines-marketed flights CI9802 and CI9805.

China Airlines, a member of Sky Team, is based at Taipei's Taoyuan Airport. Passengers not travelling to Taiwan can still use Taipei as a transit hub to connect to China Airlines' extensive network to North Asia, Europe, and North America.

With this new codeshare agreement in place, Philippine Airlines now has a codeshare partner with at least one carrier from every major airline alliance. Philippine Airlines currently has codeshare agreements in place with All Nippon Airways (ANA), Etihad, WestJet, Cathay Pacific, Turkish Airlines, and Malaysia Airlines.

Through these partnerships, Philippine Airlines uses its own flight codes on selected  domestic flights within Japan and Canada operated by ANA and WestJet respectively, while ANA and Etihad have their own flight codes on selected flights within the Philippines operated by Philippine Airlines.

Passengers on code-share flights benefit by receiving a boarding card for both flights at their point-of-origin, onward baggage transfer, and a more seamless experience. Lounge access and mileage accrual may also be available.

Although officials at Philippine Airlines have expressed their desire to someday join an alliance, the Star Alliance all but ruled out interest in letting Asia's first airline join its ranks, citing a desire to protect interests of its existing members before letting other carriers in.

    2. The third paragraph specifically states that China Airlines is a member of Sky Team. Nowhere in the article stated that China Airlines is a member of Star Alliance.

    3. True. Why are you so interested with airline alliances? PAL should Just work hard, impress its passengers and provide excellent service and amenities so you can upstage those 4-star and 5-star airlines; you can do it! Meanwhile this is a good move for PAL and China Airlines because Eva Air, also of Taiwan and a star alliance member, is now a 4-star airline, you know what I mean?

    4. EVA is the next Singapore Airlines, trust me! It is making waves in North America and if it is fielding multiple flights from Taiwan to major US cities, that really means something good!
