What's Next in Europe for Philippine Airlines?

After committing to acquire at least six Airbus A350-900 aircraft, Philippine Airlines is now in a position to increase capacity and add new destinations. At the announcement of the order, the national flag carrier revealed that it was targeting new flights to Paris, Rome, and Frankfurt. While it is a strong possibility that a new route may be launched by 2017, it remains unclear what city will be served next.

At present, PAL only operates one European long-haul route to London's Heathrow Airport. That route is presently served by four weekly Airbus A340 flights. However, Philippine Airlines intends to offer daily flights to London beginning in June of this year. Since opening the route to London in 2013, the national flag carrier has been eager to tap into other parts of Europe. 

Philippine Airlines President Jaime Bautista recently revealed in an interview with Travel News Asia that he hopes to launch a new route to Europe by 2017. According to Philippine Airlines spokesperson, Cielo Villaluna, PAL is currently evaluating Paris and Rome as candidates for its next European destination. 

Unconfirmed reports from the Exciting Centennial for Philippine Aviation blog indicate that Philippine Airlines is currently securing regulatory approvals from both Italy and France to operate flights to both countries. A slot application has been submitted to Rome Fiumicino Airport to begin four weekly flights at the end of 2016 with an Airbus A340-300 aircraft. 

Meanwhile, the national flag carrier is also in slot negotiations with Paris. According to David Lim, PAL Commercial Group Senior Vice President, Philippine Airlines intends to begin flights to Paris in 2016 pending the successful acquisition of favourable slots at Charles de Gaulle Airport. However, it is believed that PAL is currently having difficulty obtaining its preferred slots. 

It remains unclear whether flights to Paris will be initially operated by an A340-300 or an A330-300 aircraft. The latest unconfirmed reports indicate that the route to Paris may be operated by a 368-seat A330 four times weekly with a stop in Dubai. However, these aircraft would only operate the route temporarily until the arrival of the Airbus A350-900.

NEXT DESTINATION: FRANCE VS. ITALY

In a report released by anna.aero, it was reported that Milan, Italy is the number one unserved market from Manila, according to data from the OAG Traffic Analyser. Passenger traffic between the two cities grew nearly 27% in 2015 compared to 2014 with approximately 37,630 passengers travelling the route.

Nearly 24% of the traffic between Manila and Milan is currently travelling via Muscat aboard Oman Air. Meanwhile, traffic between Manila and Rome grew by 7.5% up to 32,513 passengers. That represents a combined total of 70,143 passengers travelling between the Philippines and Italy in 2015.

According to the International National Institute of Statistics, Italy is also home to the largest population of Overseas Filipinos in the European Union with more than 170,000 living in the country. Although there is strong demand between the two nations and a large market for religious tourism, Philippine Airlines is faced with a challenge in that it wants to fly to Rome via Dubai. However, the Italian government only granted direct flights between the Philippines and Italy. 

Being able to make an intermediary stop in Dubai to pick up passengers bound for Italy would not only help ensure the viability of the route, but it would also give Philippine Airlines the flexibility of operating the route with an Airbus A330-300. 

Meanwhile, passenger traffic between Manila and Paris grew by 33.3% in 2015. Approximately, 34,347 passengers travelled between the two capitals last year. Although the numbers are considerably smaller than Italy, Paris may be a more appealing and viable destination if Philippine Airlines is able to obtain its preferred slots and serve the destination via Dubai. 

It is also rumoured that Philippine Airlines may be exploring the possibility of flights to Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Both flights could also be routed via Dubai, where the national flag carrier currently holds fifth freedom rights.


However, not all industry experts believe mounting additional flights to Europe is the best strategy for Philippine Airlines. According to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, while the A350 might make potential European routes look more attractive, Philippine Airlines will face intense competition from Gulf carriers and several other Asian carriers in the European market. PAL may generate better returns by using its newly expanded long haul fleet to expand in North America, while establishing partnerships with other airlines to cover Europe.

    1. Everything is a matter of the ticket price and the aircraft. Prices from LHR to MNL are quite too expensive. I would be curious how much they would ask from Paris or Milan. With the old A340 it will be empty similar to the LHR route. And the service of the staff must become better. Well, compared to most airlines in America, PAL is already nearly perfect! ;)

  2. PAL must take its time considering a long haul European route. It is best to start the routes with one stop services to pull in more traffic, like EVA Air and China Airlines via BKK. Then it can go into increasing frequencies once the general public gets to know their presence, not forgetting to upgrade their onboard offerings at a competitive price. But definitely better commit their focus more into boosting their flights to North America. It's interesting that Seattle has more indirect traffic to MNL than Chicago. Maybe they can do better with an MNL-YYZ via SEA route and go beyond the opportunities that lie ahead of them.

  3. The distance between Seattle-Tacoma airport (SEA) and Vancouver (YVR) is only 140miles, so that's a few hrs drive. PAL might need to test the SEA market to see if passengers would be willing to pay several hundred dollars more to fly out of SEA vs drive a few hours to YVR and save money.

    If PAL wanted to test the SEA market they could add on a MNL-YVR-SEA leg twice weekly with a A340, like they used to do with LAS years ago.

    If the market proves viable, direct MNL-SEA flights utilizing the older A340's or B777 would be easy to add once the MNL-YYZ MNL-JFK routes are switched to the non-stop A359 polar route.

    1. Are you kidding? Driving from Seattle to Vancouver is always a nightmare because of the horrendous traffic. Why make a disastrous connection from one country to another (big hassle at the border as well) just to fly your precious PAL? Come on, Seattle has its own 5-star US and Asian airlines serving Asia particularly Manila!

  4. Everywhere you focus, there is always a strong competition. Those who are used to names like CX, SQ, Emirates from Rome to Manila are real competitors. Seattle is virtually controlled by Asiana, EVA and Korean. Vancouver is a CX country using 777s with 3-3-3 Y seating, Paris has Qatar Air, Emirates and Turkish Air. And the real handicap here is PAL's 3-star rating from Skytrax? What now, Mr. Bautista?

  5. PAL fails to understand that the time slots that changed between Manila and London have caused less passengers to fly this route and the same will happen with Paris and Rome. PAL changed the flight times to compete with Quantas. Which UK passenger wants to arrive in Europe at night time, when virtually every other every airline lands in the morning from Asia. The airlines do this to meet European connections. PAL will never be able to compete with Quantas unless the flight leaves Manila at midnight onwards to London. The flight arriving in Manila should arrive in the afternoon not the evening. Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines understands this, PAL still hasn't got a clue

    1. There are only so many slots available at any given airport. The decision to award landing rights and a gate slot is up to the airport authority.

      PAL can request a specific slot time but usually an airline with only one route out of that airport is given a very unfavorable slot while other airlines that have multiple routes are given priority.

      BTW landing slots are not free, the airline has to pay. Some airports charge more, some less. NAIA has some of the highest landing fees in the World with RP airlines paying less and outside airlines paying more. That's why many airlines choose to stay away from direct flights into NAIA.

    4. Eastern European backpackers are welcome although you can typically see them in the 8-dollar hostels, eat adidas on the side streets and mag-trapo lang at the bus and train stations para makatipid ng shower fees. Welcome, anyway, huwag lang magdumi at gumawa ng krimen, ayos lang!

    5. As far as I know the Philippines charge high taxes from European Airlines, because they base the taxes on the length of the route! As longer the route as more landing fees. That's why KLM nowadays makes a stopover in Taiwan and continue with less passengers to Manila (they don't have 5th rights). Landing there is cheaper than paying the high taxes in the Philippines.

Even if PAL wants to come back to Las Vegas, Korean Air has consolidated its nonstop services to (Seoul) with easy connections to all large Asian cities there, Manila included, plus Chinese Airlines like China Southern of Canton has partnered with Virgin America to haul connecting Asian passengers to big airports like LAX, SFO, SEA served by China Southern onto Manila with airfares you could not even believe, are existing. That's what Korean Air did 30 years ago when it started to grow - compete first by lowering fares, provide incredible inflight service, let Juan de la Cruz become addicted to KE's services and other perks, and today, KE can now dictate its fares - you know what, it is one of the most expensive! I do not care now, as long as I have confidence and trust in KE, I am now retired and starting to enjoy life to the fullest. I hope PAL will do the same marketing strategy!!!

      Promise us the best fare, best inflight services, best seating arrangements (no sardinas, please), best flight schedules from USA to Asia, etc.
      We do not care about PAL crews' looks and dimensions/profiles as long as they work hard like we see from crews (male and female) from CX, OZ, KE, SQ, EVA, China Air, Turkish, etc.

  8. Filipino vietnamese here......i bought ticket from pal san francisco to ho chi minh via manila and it was the cheapest ticket i purchased much cheaper than eva air and korean air. T2 outdated and small so transfer is so easy as abcd so no need for me to ask for direction.flight delayed almost an hour because of runway traffic.sure i will fly with pal again unless vietnam airline mount flight to US(i prefer direct flight)

    1. Dapat lang na magsimula ang PAL sa mabababang pamasahe papuntang Ho Chi Minh dahil nagsisimula na naman na umasenso ang Vietnam after the disastrous US-led Vietnam War. Habang wala pang flight ang Vietnam Air papuntang Americas, PAL need to consolidate its position as the friend of the low-cost minded Vietnamese! Ganyan lang talaga ang negosyo, simula sa wala, cultivate mo, hanggang marami ka nang parokyano. Chao!!!

Korek, even if PAL will field its A350 Manila/LAS nonstop, you would not see a $548 roundtrip fare because it has a lot of financial obligations (paying Airbus Industries), taxes, overhead expenses, etc. China country can do what it wants in this world now - let its airlines compete to the bones with all its "blessings!" I, as customer, want to see that scenario always!

  10. PAL on Manila/Rome/Milan/Rome/Manila. Lower your fares better than Oman Air's fare and you will win all the hearts of the Pinoy OFWs in Italy, Sardinia, Cyprus, Libya, Tunisia, Croatia, Albania and even France (because there are many Pinoys there, too.) Hala, Bira! Ngayun na!!!

    1. And then you will also win the hearts of most european tourists, who only look for the cheapest prices! The cheapest they will choose! A stopover is no problem for 95% of all european tourists. Some of them (like me) they like stopovers.

  12. Philippine airlines should also consider europeans travelling towards Australia, New Zealand and other asian destinations, such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong etc. They should choose slots that can give travellers shorter layover in MNL.

  13. well dati ko pang naisip na lumipad ang PR sa Italia kasi dun naman maraming Pilipino, pero kung hindi masustain ang non-stop flight, eh ok lang na mag via Dubai or any middle east city sila wag lang Saudi. sa abu dhab meromn na ring 2 airlines which fly to Italy (Etihad at Alitalia) so wag na dun. from DUbai EK lang ang direct so maaaring dun sila mag konek since may righst naman sila to opearte out of DXB. So gawin nila Roma-dubai-MNL-DXB-Rome or pwde rin from Milan maki code share na lang sila with Alitalia from Milan-Roma-Milan so pwdeng isang ticket lang to purchase

  14. If PAL has to make a stop over in DXB then I rather fly EK. The whole point is to have a non stop direct flight. Plus the choice of aircraft should matters. I flew HKG-MNL on the A330 in businesss didn't even have a PTV. They just offered Ipads with preloaded content. I can immagine doing the MNL-Europe routes in cramped economy with no IFE. PAL fares can't compete with middle east carriers so better give us a reason to spend more when we choose PAL.

  15. In my mind I think it would make sense to operate a two stop flight in southern Europe. MAD-MXP-MNL.

    1) Italy and Spain have a big Filipino community who have to take flights via London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Doha... to fly back home.

    2) There is a great demand for flights to Asia in both Italy and Spain that is not being satisfied by local airlines. Emirates, Qatar and Turkish are eating their cake while other airlines such as Iberia or Alitalia are trying timidly to break into Asia with flights to Tokyo and Shanghai.

    3) Singapore airlines operates BCN-MXP-SIN flight. Cathay Pacific is launching flights to both Madrid and Barcelona.

    4) Paris is saturated and as a tourist destination has suffered greatly from recent terrorist attacks.

    5) A more risky but potentially lucrative route would be to fly via Spain to latin America, thus opening the first successful route between LatAm and Asia. Singapore airlines failed to do this. But PAL could establish itself as a low cost way for latin americans to visit Asia. Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Mexico and Bogota would be good candidates.
