Singapore Airlines Sends 787-10s to Manila

Singapore Airlines (SIA) started deploying its newest aircraft, the Boeing 787-10 to Manila on July 3 amidst an SIA official's bright outlook for the carrier's Manila-Singapore route.

Although there is only one regularly-scheduled 787 service from Singapore to Manila, an additional one was used on the earlier SQ910 (outbound) and SQ917 (inbound) flights on July 3.  That earlier flight was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute upon its arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).  SQ910 and SQ917 were also part of a welcoming event attended by Singapore Ambassador to the Philippines Kok Li Peng and Singapore Airlines Manila Station Manager Eugene Goh.  The inaugural flight was flown by a Filipino pilot, Captain Julio Rosales.

The 787 is used on SQ918, the last SIA flight to depart Singapore for Manila, and its corresponding return flight - SQ915 - the first flight to depart Manila for Singapore the following morning.  This means Manila-based passengers looking to maximise their time in Singapore will be able to enjoy the 787's features.

With the 787-10, SQ915 and 918 have an increased capacity of 337 seats up from the 285 seats offered by the Airbus A330, the previous aircraft to serve such flights.  The new aircraft features a 1-4-1 configuration in business class which means each passenger seated there has direct access to the aisle.  Business class seats also go fully flat-bed.  Economy class passengers meanwhile benefit from seats with an ergonomically-designed backrest, a six-way adjustable headrest, and foldable wings.  Each passenger has in-flight entertainment (IFE) monitors which feature audio and video on-demand (AVOD).  Passengers with a Kris Flyer account and the Singapore Airlines app installed on their smart phones can choose which content to watch or listen to and save them to continue enjoying them on subsequent flights that have compatible IFE systems installed.

According to Captain Rosales, the 787 is also a fuel-efficient aircraft.

SIA General Manager Balagopal Kundavara said that the carrier decided to deploy SIA's newest aircraft on its service to Manila because of an uptick in demand for full-service and business class products which SIA offers and that using such an aircraft shows SIA's commitment to 'constantly provide our customers with a premium travel experience like no other'.  He also mentioned that the upgrade of aircraft is due to the fact that SIA could no longer add more flights as a result of slot constraints at NAIA.  Nonetheless, Kundavara sees the Philippines as a 'growing market'.

SIA's newest aircraft also regularly travels to Osaka
