Direct IloIlo to Korea Flights Targeted, PAL to Add Guangju

Both Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific are presently exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from IloIlo to Korea according to representatives of both airlines.

Juancho Demaguila of Philippine Airlines said that the airline is considering direct flights to Korea due to the number of Korean tourists coming to Iloilo for travel and study purposes. Following the successful launch of direct flights last year to Hong Kong and Singapore, Cebu Pacific wants to continue that success by introducing new service to Korea.
The large number of overseas foreign workers from the Western Visayas that currently reside in Korea are expected to be major beneficiaries of the new flights. Although no formal announcements, have been made, it is also rumoured that the two airlines are studying the possibility of direct service to Japan and Xiamen, China in an effort to increase tourism to the region which is home to Boracay Island, one of the most popular beach destinations in Asia.
But Iloilo isn't the only city trying to tap into the market potential in the Western Visayas. Neighbouring city Bacolod in Negros Occidental is trying to capture some of the tourism traffic by fighting for an international flight of its own. Initial discussions between the province and Cebu Pacific have indicated that Bacolod may be getting a direct service to Hong Kong in 2014. Bacolod is home to a modern airport like Iloilo but previously lacked adequate immigration infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines will be adding its third destination in South Korea on July 25, 2013. The airline will be flying to Guangju, the sixth largest city in the country with flight service twice per week aboard an Airbus A320 aircraft. The new service will fly direct from Manila on Wednesday and Saturdays to Muan International Airport in Korea. South Korea remains the number one source of tourism for the Philippines.
