AirAsia Zest Opens Cebu Hub

AirAsia Zest has designated Mactan-Cebu International Airport as its second major hub as the airline revealed plans to launch new domestic and international flights from Cebu.

The airline plans to launch new domestic flights from Cebu to top tourist destinations including Puerto Princesa, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro. In addition, the airline will also introduce an international flight connecting Cebu to AirAsia's primary hub in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The new domestic flights are scheduled to begin on November 15. Davao and Cagayan de Oro will be served with daily flights while flights to Puerto Princesa will operate four times weekly. The international service to Kuala Lumpur will begin on December 1 with one daily flight.

According to Joy Caneba, AirAsia Zest's Chief of Operations, the new flight to Kuala Lumpur will connect Filipinos in Cebu to AirAsia's network of more than 85 destinations across Asean. "The hype is building up for AirAsia Zest and we are thrilled to offer an extraordinary promo as we expand operations in Cebu," said Caneba. "Aside from our low fares, we are offering Filipinos more choices, enhanced services and access to AirAsia's over 85 destinations stretching across all Asean countries as well as China, India, and Australia." She added that the new domestic services will provide Cebuanos with increased accessibility to the country's top tourist destinations.

The news comes as AirAsia Philippines discontinued its service from Clark International Airport following a decision to concentrate its operations at the hub of its partner carrier, AirAsia Zest at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The move suggests that routes out of Clark are not viable but AirAsia Philippines is not giving up completely on Clark just yet. AirAsia Zest chairman Michael Romero revealed earlier this month that AirAsia Philippines is considering Clark as a hub for AirAsia X, the long haul affiliate of AirAsia.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Zest will receive its official launch on October 21, 2013 when the airline is expected to announce new international and domestic destinations. AirAsia Zest is expected to increase growth by 15-20 percent in 2013 as the airline prepares to take delivery of three new Airbus A320 aircraft before the end of the year.
