AirAsia Zest Pushes Upgrades of NAIA Terminal 4

AirAsia Zest is asking the Department of Transportation and Communications to expand and improve Terminal 4 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport as it shifts its operations from Clark International Airport and prepares to launch more domestic and international flights.

The airline has already opened discussions with the DOTC and the Manila International Airport Authority to address improvements to the operations of NAIA Terminal 4. According to Joy Caneba, Chief Operating Officer of AirAsia Zest, the airline sees huge potential for its operations at NAIA Terminal 4.

"We have requested for an expansion of NAIA 4. If you look at Terminal 4, there is a big potential for it. It used to be just a domestic terminal but it is now flying three international destinations with AirAsia Zest alone and there is a possibility to expand it," said Caneba. "The problem with Terminal 4 is that its land bank is already constrained, so the key there is efficiency. You have to reallocate for certain areas and improve it to be able to suit the needs for international travel."

TigerAir Philippines is also currently operating out of Terminal 4. In addition to its regularly scheduled domestic flights, TigerAir also operates an international flight to Phuket, Thailand twice per week from Terminal 4. Caneba says that NAIA 4 has a capacity of approximately 12 million passengers annually. "There is a plan to rehabilitate it. They are seeing more passengers using it giving them more incentive and motivation to fast track the project," Caneba said. She added that AirAsia Zest is also exploring the possibility of using NAIA Terminal 3 to support its expansion.

"We believe in the multiplier effect of the aviation industry. We think that if we are able to increase and improve efficiencies of the airport, that will bring more traffic for the Philippines and improve the economy, hotels, restaurants, and transportation business," said Caneba. "That's why we are aggressive in helping Terminal 4 to have more flights, to expand more, and to catch more traffic. But we also want to have flights in Terminal 3."

The Department of Transportation and Communications has said that it expects work on Terminal 3 to be completed by the third quarter of 2014 enabling the terminal to finally operate at full capacity. The Manila International Airport is currently in the process of engaging in a feasibility study for a P4-billion budget terminal to be constructed beside NAIA Terminal 3. The proposed terminal is intended to have a capacity for 10 million passengers per year and will be built on 3.3 hectares of land that is currently owned by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority.

"We are very pleased with the response that we got from the DOTC and MIAA," said Caneba. "They really want to provide us better service. We support the efforts of MIAA." According to Jose Angel Honrado, General Manager of the Manila International Airport Authority, once the proposed budget terminal is operational, domestic operations of all budget airlines would be transferred there enabling foreign airlines to move into Terminal 3.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Zest continues its international expansion from its new home at Terminal 4. The airline recently announced that it would be launching the first and only direct service between Manila and Miri, Malaysia and that it would also be reintroducing direct non-stop flights to Macau.

  1. You've got to be kidding, of course. The DOTC can't fix Terminal 1 properly and can't get Terminal 3 up and operating fully. How do you expect them to do anything about Terminal 4??? First we need a functioning DOTC!

  4. Your own day at Thailand should in no way end up being total in case you have not set base upon Phuket, the town that has all of it. It is possible to practically complete anything at all within Phuket, whether indoors as well as outside the house, whether rainwater as well as glimmer.
