In an application filed with the Civil Aeronautics Board, AirAsia Zest has applied for the 540 unused entitlements that are currently held by PAL Express. If approved, Bangkok will become the carrier's first destination in Thailand. AirAsia Zest's sister carrier, Thai AirAsia already has an extensive domestic and international operation from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport serving popular tourist destinations including Phuket and Chiang Mai.

In November 2012, the Philippines and Thailand expanded their air services agreement, increasing the number of seat entitlements by more than 25 percent in an effort to boost trade and tourism between the two nations. Under the new agreement, there are now 6,880 weekly seats between Manila and Thailand. Outside of Manila, the two nations agreed to unlimited flights.
Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and Thai Airways International currently operate direct flights from Manila to Bangkok. Tigerair Philippines operates flights from Clark International Airport to Bangkok, while Cebu Pacific also operates service from Manila to Phuket, Thailand's top beach resort destination.
