Cathay Pacific Launching Service to Boston in 2015

Filipino travellers bound for Boston or the east coast of the United States will have one more option next year as Cathay Pacific Airways introduces four weekly flights beginning in May 2015. The new service will enable travellers from Manila on Cathay Pacific flights bound for Hong Kong to connect to the new service at the carrier's global hub.

The Hong Kong flag carrier plans to operate the route using its four-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The cabin is configured with six suites in first class, 53 seats in business class, 34 seats in premium economy, and 182 in economy. Cathay Pacific, rated the World's Best Airline in the 2014 Skytrax Awards, offers passengers a premium experience complete with impressive in-flight dining options and a wide array of in-flight entertainment and audio-video on demand that is delivered to travellers through personal entertainment screens.

Cathay Pacific embarks on the US expansion in the midst of a healthy profit in its most recent financial report. The carrier has invested heavily in recent years in new products and services designed to enhance the guest experience including its all-new premium economy class

With the introduction of the new route, Boston will become Cathay Pacific's fifth destination in the United States. Reservations for the new flights are now available on the Cathay Pacific website, with the inaugural flight expected to take off from Hong Kong on May 2, 2015.

Flights will depart Hong Kong every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 6:00pm, arriving at Boston Logan International Airport at 9:30pm. The return flight departs Boston on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 1:45am, arriving back in Hong Kong at 5:35am the following day.

The news comes as Philippine Airlines plans an expansion of its own to the United States with planned destinations of New York, Chicago, and Florida. However, PAL is currently in the middle of an ownership dispute, which is delaying any launch of new services. The Philippine flag carrier is also in need of additional long-haul aircraft to support further international expansion.

Philippine Airlines recently postponed a decision to downgrade its Toronto flight, the longest flight in the PAL network, from the Boeing 777 to the A340 aircraft after a public outcry. Unlike the Boeing 777 aircraft in the fleet, the A340 aircraft is not equipped with personal screens or audio-video on demand.

When the airline revealed that it would downgrade flights this September, passengers threatened to cancel bookings after the thought of having to endure a lengthy long-haul flight without in-flight entertainment aboard the carrier's A340 aircraft. For now, the carrier is expected to maintain the Boeing 777 on Toronto flights until at least March 2015. Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific is expected to shift its services from Terminal 1 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila to Terminal 3 sometime in September.

  1. I hope they will also serve the Virginia-Washington-Baltimore area through Dulles Int'l Airport. KAL and ANA are the airlines that have one stop flights to Manila (via Pacific route).

    1. If you take ANA from Dulles to Narita, You'll usually ride a 787 from Narita to Manila. Pretty Cool
