Restoration of Legaspi Airport Completed
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines revealed earlier this week that it has completed a P40 million renovation of the Legaspi International Airport in Bicol. The single runway airport is currently the largest airport in the Bicol region serving mid-sized jets from Manila and Cebu.

The new design of the terminal building incorporates eco-friendly measures intended to minimise the use of electricity. Much of the interior is now illuminated by natural sun light, which can be attributed to the installation of wide glass walls. The glass walls also provide passengers with incredible views of the runway and the infamous Mayon Volcano. The renovated terminal building is now able to accommodate up to 500 passengers comfortably, which will enable the airport to handle simultaneous flights with ease.

Separate areas were also created to accommodate passengers arriving and departing on international flights with special areas for the Bureau of Immigration, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and Customs officials. Legaspi Airport currently serves charter flights from Shanghai and other cities in mainland China.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the government agency utilized its own budget to make improvements to the passenger terminal, which serves as an important gateway to the Bicol region and its many attractions such as the Mayon Volcano and whale sharks in Sorsogon.
Although the new Bicol International Airport is currently under construction, it could take up to five years to complete. The Civil Aviation Authority prioritized Legaspi Airport because of its importance as a tourist hub and completed the renovations for the comfort of passengers.

"The management could not just sit and watch with a blank face at the difficulties and discomforts being experienced by passengers due to the cramped space and insufficient ventilation system of the old passenger terminal," said Cynthia Tumanut, Legaspi Airport Manager, in an interview with the Sun Star.

Legaspi Airport currently serves passengers from Region 5, which includes Legaspi, Albay, Masbate, Naga, Sorsogon, Virac, Bulan, and Daet. PAL Express currently operates flights from the airport to Manila, while Cebu Pacific operates flights to both Manila and Cebu. The airport continues to operate with sunset limitations until an improved instrument landing system can be installed. However, the airport can handle night flights with prior notice.
Dapat lang! My worst nightmare occurred in 1985 flying the "tutubi" aircraft of PAL from Cebu City to Legaspi City as it met a heavy strong wind and lightning and loud thunder halfway through the flight (Sorsogon area). I just kept quiet but my new bride was panicking! Thank God, we were saved! On the ground, the tricycles from airport to the city could not operate due to the strong rain, then the water heater at Legaspi's best hotel did not function and there was a long power brownout! But we enjoyed out honeymoon downing bottles of beer and plenty of chicken hot, hot wings! Ole! Only in Legaspi !!!!!!!!!
